Mumbai Rains Updates: Schools and Colleges Closed in Thane, Palghar, Panvel and Other Districts – Full List
Heavy rains have once again brought life to a standstill in Mumbai and nearby districts. With the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing a Red Alert, authorities have announced the closure of schools and colleges in multiple areas to ensure the safety of students.
Schools and Colleges Closed in Mumbai and Thane
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) had already declared a holiday for schools and colleges on August 18 and 19, 2025, due to continuous downpours.
Now, the Thane district administration has confirmed that schools will remain shut on August 20, 2025 as well.
Panvel Municipal Corporation Orders Closure
In addition to Thane, the Panvel Municipal Corporation has also directed all schools and colleges to remain closed on August 20, 2025.
Pune Extends Holiday Till August 21
While some regions are reviewing the situation day by day, Pune district authorities have extended the closure of educational institutions till August 21, 2025.
IMD Red Alert for Several Districts
The IMD has issued a Red Alert for Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, Raigad, Ratnagiri, Chandrapur, and parts of Nashik and Pune Ghats, warning of extremely heavy rainfall.
Winds are expected to blow at 40–50 km/h with gusts up to 60 km/h, further intensifying the risk of flooding and disruptions.
Situation in Karnataka and Jammu Division
It is not just Maharashtra – several other states are also witnessing similar conditions. Authorities in Karnataka declared school holidays in seven districts – Dharwad, Chikkamagaluru, Belagavi, Karwar, Hassan, Bidar, and Madikeri – due to heavy and relentless rain.
Meanwhile, schools in Jammu Division also remained shut because of continuous rainfall and cloudbursts that triggered flash floods and landslides.
Local Transport Disruptions in Mumbai
The heavy downpour has also affected the city’s transport system. On August 19, local train services between Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus and Thane were suspended for nearly eight hours, causing major inconvenience to daily commuters.
A monorail train also broke down near Mysore Colony due to a power supply failure, prompting urgent rescue operations.
BMC’s Emergency Response
According to official updates, the BMC pumped out more than 16,451 million liters of water from six pumping stations in just four days (August 16–19). Despite these efforts, several areas in Mumbai are still reporting severe waterlogging.
Will Schools Remain Closed Beyond August 20?
As of now, the BMC has not issued a fresh order regarding the closure of schools on August 20 in Mumbai city itself. Parents and students have been advised to keep checking official announcements from their respective municipal authorities.
Conclusion
The situation across Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, Panvel, and Pune remains uncertain as continuous rainfall and IMD’s red alert pose safety risks. Parents and students are urged to stay updated with the latest notices from local administrations.
With weather conditions expected to worsen, school and college holidays may be extended further in the coming days.
